The BMW 700 was a rear-engined microcar produced from 1959 to 1965, developed at a moment when BMW was genuinely close to insolvency and needed a vehicle that bridged its Isetta bubble cars and the full-sized sedans it aspired to build. It worked — barely — buying the company enough time and revenue to develop the Neue Klasse, which actually saved it. Palau has issued dozens of automotive-themed silver pieces in this format, targeting the collector market rather than any circulation purpose.
