Equatorial Guinea has issued coins under its own name since independence in 1968, but the vast majority of its collectible output — including this piece — are privately contracted issues produced for the international numismatic market, bearing no meaningful connection to domestic circulation. The "Bioko Island" series is one of several such programs.

Megaloceros giganteus, the giant deer often misnamed the "Irish Elk," died out roughly 7,700 years ago. Its range stretched from Ireland to Siberia — Bioko Island had nothing to do with it.
