The Marshall Islands began issuing collectible commemorative coinage in the late 1980s under legislation that established the nation's own currency authority — unusual for a Pacific microstate that otherwise conducts daily commerce in U.S. dollars. These pieces were never intended for circulation and were sold directly to collectors, a practice that funded government revenue while producing no meaningful numismatic wear history.
"Big Boy" refers to the Lima Lima class Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 articulated steam locomotive, the largest and most powerful steam engine ever built by axle count and tractive effort.
