Liberia's commemorative coinage of the 1990s was largely produced by overseas private mints targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation — this piece is a product of that trade. The Berlin Airlift itself ran from June 1948 to May 1949, during which Western Allied aircraft flew over 200,000 sorties to supply West Berlin after the Soviet Union blocked all ground routes into the city.
