Harrison's presidency is more often remembered for what surrounded it than for the man himself — Grover Cleveland won the popular vote in 1888, lost the Electoral College, then returned four years later to defeat Harrison in a rematch. Liberia's long-running series of U.S. presidential commemoratives has no formal connection to American numismatic authorities; these are foreign-issued collector pieces produced largely for the international souvenir market, with Liberia lending its issuing authority to items it has no organic historical relationship with.
