Liberia's late-1990s and early-2000s commemorative program was essentially a licensing operation — the government contracted with foreign distributors, primarily based in the United States and Germany, to produce collector coins with almost no connection to Liberia itself. This piece, commemorating the April 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter, fits squarely in that commercial run. P.G.T. Beauregard commanded the Confederate batteries; Robert Anderson commanded the Union garrison and surrendered after 34 hours of shelling without a single combat fatality on either side.
Struck in quantity for the collector market, not for circulation.
