Barclays DCO — the "Dominion, Colonial and Overseas" arm formed in 1925 through the merger of Colonial Bank, the Anglo-Egyptian Bank, and the National Bank of South Africa — operated as a commercial issuing bank across British territories at a time when central banking infrastructure was thin or nonexistent.
