5 Dollars Bank of Montreal

The Bank of Montreal's 1914 five-dollar notes were produced by the American Bank Note Company's Ottawa facility — the Canadian branch operation that handled much of the Dominion's chartered bank printing during this period. ABNC Ottawa was a distinct press from its New York parent, though it drew on the same engraved plate inventory, which creates occasional confusion in attributing design work to specific craftsmen.

This issue falls within the final window of privately-issued Canadian chartered bank currency before the 1935 Bank of Canada Act gradually displaced the commercial banks from note circulation entirely. The Bank of Montreal was among the last holdouts, redeeming its outstanding notes through the 1940s.
