The Bank of East Tennessee, chartered in Knoxville, operated through the antebellum period as one of several competing Tennessee state banks navigating the perpetual tension between sound-money conservatism and the credit demands of a rapidly developing interior economy. By 1855, the bank had branches in multiple east Tennessee towns, which complicates attribution on surviving notes — branch-signed examples carry different redemption histories depending on whether that office remained solvent through the late 1850s failures that swept the region.
Danforth, Wright & Co. held the plate contract during a transitional moment in their own firm history, shortly before the company reorganized into the American Bank Note Company in 1858.
