Palau has issued commemorative silver pieces with applied color and precious metal plating since the late 1990s, largely distributed through the European collector market via Pacific island licensing arrangements. These coins carry legal tender status under Palauan law but were never intended for — and have never seen — domestic circulation in a country whose de facto currency is the US dollar.
