Reverse description The reverse presents a dramatic commemorative scene depicting the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941. In the central field, a Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft is shown in low-level flight, rendered in fine detail with Japanese roundel markings visible on the wings. An aircraft carrier occupies the upper field, while below the aircraft, warships under attack are depicted amid the chaos of battle. The surrounding legend reads 'ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR' along the upper periphery and 'DECEMBER 7, 1941' along the right, with the denomination '· 5 DOLLARS ·' inscribed along the lower rim between two raised dots.

Additional information

Liberia's commemorative dollar series of this period was essentially a private mint marketing operation — the Central Bank licensed designs to foreign distributors, and the coins were struck in bulk by European mints with virtually no connection to Liberian monetary policy. The Pearl Harbor issue appeared around the 60th anniversary of the attack, part of a wave of World War II-themed pieces flooding the collector market at the time.

December 7, 1941 killed 2,403 Americans in under two hours. The attack sank or damaged eighteen naval vessels, including the battleship Arizona, whose wreck still leaks oil into the harbor today.
