The city grew wealthy enough that Augustus used it as a military base, and by the 4th century it ranked among the largest cities in the empire. This coin belongs to Niue's "Amber Route" series, which used the small Pacific territory's numismatic licensing agreements to fund a gold issue that no mint in the region would otherwise have had cause to produce.
