The Abbey of Saint Gall, founded in the 7th century around the hermitage of the Irish monk Gallus, became one of the most influential scriptoria in medieval Europe. Its library — still intact in St. Gallen, Switzerland — holds over 160,000 manuscripts and incunabula, and the abbey's 8th-century architectural plan, the Plan of Saint Gall, is the oldest surviving architectural drawing from the Middle Ages. Palau has issued numerous silver pieces under UNESCO World Heritage licensing arrangements, with Saint Gall's inclusion on that list dating to 1983.
