The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeño Indians, based in Warner Springs, California, is one of the more isolated federally recognized tribes in the state — their reservation sits at roughly 5,000 feet elevation in the San Bernardino Mountains with no casino operation to generate revenue. Tribal coinage issues like this one emerged from the broader Native American token and currency movement of the 2000s and 2010s, in which smaller tribes issued limited collectible denominations partly as sovereignty assertions and partly as fundraising instruments directed at numismatic markets rather than daily commerce.
