Congress authorized this coin under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023, which mandated commemorative issues marking the 250th anniversary of both the Marine Corps and the Navy. The Marines trace their official founding to November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized two battalions of marines — though the Corps was disbanded after the Revolution and re-established in 1798, a genealogical ambiguity the institution has never been eager to publicize.
