The Agricultural Bank of Toronto was chartered in 1834 and collapsed in 1837, making its entire note-issuing life span under three years. It was among the casualties of the financial panic that swept Upper Canada following the suspension of specie payments, leaving noteholders with paper that quickly became worthless. Few institutions from this period survived into the 1840s.

The dual denomination — dollars alongside shillings — reflects the genuine monetary confusion of 1830s Upper Canada, where British sterling, American dollars, and local accounts all competed in daily commerce. This was not a stylistic choice; it was a practical necessity for a note expected to cross hands in both currencies.
