Suriname redenominated its currency in January 2004, replacing the guilder at a rate of 1,000:1 to create the Surinamese dollar. This P#162 series followed several years later as a replacement issue, with Giesecke & Devrient supplying the notes from Leipzig — a long-standing arrangement for Surinamese paper currency. The holographic band was a meaningful upgrade over earlier dollar series security features, reflecting persistent counterfeiting pressure on small-denomination Caribbean and South American issues during this period.
