| Reverse description | Printed in green intaglio, the reverse is dominated by a central vignette of the Bank of Montreal's neoclassical head office building in Montreal, rendered in fine detail with a columned portico and horse-drawn carriages in the foreground. Two large numeral '5' counters in elaborate guilloche rosettes flank the central vignette on either side. The bank name 'Bank of Montreal' arcs across the top in serif lettering, and the denomination 'Five Dollars' appears in a straight legend at the foot of the central frame. The printer's imprint 'Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited' is present in small type at the bottom margin. |

The Bank of Montreal's 1935 series was issued during the final years the chartered banks could legally issue their own Dominion-circulating currency. The Bank of Canada Act of 1934 had already established the central bank, and by 1945 all chartered bank notes were fully withdrawn from circulation — making 1935 effectively the last generation of private Canadian bank note issues.
W.A. Bog served as General Manager and C.B. Gordon as President at the time of signing. The Canadian Bank Note Company produced the series in Ottawa, where it had operated since relocating from Montreal in the early twentieth century.
