Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of King Edward VII in military dress uniform set within an oval frame, flanked by guilloché underprint panels in green and gold. At upper centre, the bank title THE SOVEREIGN BANK OF CANADA arches in bold letterpress, below the inscription INCORPORATED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT. To the left, a circular seal of the Sovereign Bank of Canada with a crowned shield appears as an underprint, while the denomination FIVE DOLLARS and the date Toronto, May 1, 1902 appear at lower right, with two manuscript signatures and the imprint of the American Bank Note Co., Ottawa at the bottom margin.

Reverse description The reverse displays a richly engraved composition in green, gold, and brown, with two large symmetrical guilloché rosettes bearing the numeral 5 and the word FIVE flanking a central vignette of a beaver beneath a royal crown, executed in fine intaglio. The bank title THE SOVEREIGN BANK arcs above the central medallion and OF CANADA below, with the word FIVE inscribed beneath. Large numeral 5s occupy each corner, and an intricate lathework border frames the entire design.
