| Obverse description | The obverse is dominated by a central vignette of the Union Bank of Halifax building rendered in fine intaglio engraving, flanked on both sides by large ornate guilloche panels bearing the word FIVE in bold letterpress. The numeral 5 appears in each corner within decorative frames, with the bank title UNION BANK OF HALIFAX arched across the top. The lower portion carries the place of issue NOVA SCOTIA, a manuscript date of 1886, and two signature lines for the Cashier and President, with the imprint of the British American Bank Note Co. at the foot. |
