The Bank of Prince Edward Island was chartered in 1856 and operated as a genuinely independent colonial institution — PEI did not join Confederation until 1873, the year after this note was issued. The timing matters: these notes were printed just as the political pressure to enter Canada was reaching its peak, and the bank would ultimately be absorbed into the broader Dominion banking framework within a few years of issue.
Canada Bank Note Printing Co. handled the work in Montreal, making this an early example of their output before the firm merged into the American Bank Note Company consolidation of 1879.
