| 裏面の説明 | The reverse is printed in a single colour on plain paper, with an intricately engraved guilloche lathe-work design forming two large circular medallions at left and right, each bearing the numeral '5' at centre. A central cartouche with scalloped borders carries the bank name in bold serif lettering, surrounded by fine engine-turned geometric underprint patterns filling the entire field. |

The Summerside Bank was chartered in 1866 and operated for barely two decades before being absorbed by the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1901. It was a small regional institution serving the western end of Prince Edward Island, and its note issues were correspondingly limited. The British American Bank Note Company in Montreal produced this series — BABN had only been formed the previous year through the merger of two competing firms, and the Summerside commission was among the company's earliest contracted work.
PEI notes from this period are genuinely scarce, not due to any single event but because the island's small population meant low print runs and high redemption rates once the issuing banks folded.
