Obverse description The obverse is printed in green and black on white cotton paper, with a central vignette of a fully-rigged sailing ship under sail occupying the upper centre. The issuer's name, BANK OF ACADIA, is set in bold letterpress across the middle, beneath which the promise to pay inscription reads in cursive script. Numeral 5 counters appear in ornate guilloche medallions at the lower left and upper right, with NOVA SCOTIA inscribed in the upper right corner.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green, with a highly ornate cross-shaped guilloche pattern dominating the centre, formed by two intersecting decorative bands. The words BANK OF ACADIA are engraved along the horizontal band, while NOVA SCOTIA is split across the vertical band in the upper and lower sections. Numeral 5 counters in circular lace-work frames occupy each of the four corners.
