The Southern Bank Note Company was one of the few engraving firms operating in the South at secession, and the Confederacy leaned on it heavily in the first months of 1861 before establishing more centralized printing arrangements in Richmond. This note predates that consolidation. New Orleans, still the commercial capital of the South at this point, was a logical production hub — though the city would fall to Union forces in April 1862, effectively ending the Southern Bank Note Company's role in Confederate currency production.
The red fibre paper is the distinguishing feature of P#14 within the broader 1861 $5 series. Confederate notes on this substrate are considerably scarcer than those on plain white stock, and the fibre itself was an anti-counterfeiting measure borrowed from Union practice — an irony that apparently went unnoticed.
