Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a central vignette of a reclining Indigenous figure in a pastoral landscape, flanked by the numeral 5 in large ornate counters at each corner. A small vignette of a steamboat appears at the lower left, and a standing male figure occupies the lower right corner. The bank title SAINT STEPHEN'S BANK is inscribed in bold letterpress across the centre, with the obligation text and date Saint Stephens, August 1st 1852 beneath; the note reads New Brunswick at upper left and upper right.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a single brown-sepia tone and composed entirely of intricate lathe-work guilloche rosettes arranged symmetrically across the field, with three large central medallions and smaller oval counters at the corners. A central rectangular panel bears the inscription THE ST. STEPHEN'S BANK in bold serif lettering set within the guilloche framework. The overall design relies entirely on fine engine-turned geometric ornament with no pictorial vignettes.
