Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson were among the most accomplished banknote engravers operating in antebellum America, and their work for small private banks was often technically superior to the notes those banks actually deserved to back. The Farmer's Joint Stock Banking Co. was a short-lived Ontario institution operating under the relatively permissive pre-Confederation Canadian free banking environment, yet it contracted one of New York's premier security printers for its issue — a common practice among Upper Canadian banks seeking to project credibility through print quality.
RWH&E would later merge into the American Bank Note Company in 1858, making this note a product of the firm in its final decade of independent operation.
