| Obverse description | Central vignette of a large ocean steamship underway at sea, set within an arched frame with fine guilloche underprint in green. The denomination numerals '5' appear in each corner within ornate cartouches, with the date 'January 3rd 1938' and place of issue 'Georgetown, British Guiana' to the lower left, and the sterling equivalent '£1-0-10' to the lower right.
