| Beschrijving keerzijde | Printed in green and brown on white paper, the reverse carries the word CINCUENTA in large bold letters within a decorative guilloche panel at centre, flanked by ornamental cornerpieces. MONTEVIDEO appears both above and below the central panel in green letterpress, and a further inscription CINCUENTA PESOS runs along the lower border within a guilloche cartouche; a vertical panel along the right margin repeats the bank name. The overall layout is mirror-printed relative to the obverse, as the note was designed to be read from the back through the paper. |

The Banco de Londres y Río de la Plata was the Argentine subsidiary of the London and River Plate Bank, chartered in London and operating from Buenos Aires from 1863. It was one of the few private banks in the region with genuine British backing, and its notes circulated alongside those of local institutions whose reserves were considerably more questionable. The dual denomination — 5 Doblones and 50 Pesos — reflects the monetary confusion of the period, when the doubloon-based accounting system had not yet fully yielded to the peso.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference indicates this is classified as a private or provincial issue, not a national emission — a distinction that mattered enormously to holders when redemption disputes arose.
