Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 as a proprietary scrip redeemable at Disney theme parks and resort shops — legal in function but never legal tender. The 1989 series marked the debut of Scrooge McDuck as the printed signatory Treasurer, a deliberate bit of self-aware humor given the character's fictional identity as the world's wealthiest miser. The currency was designed to stay in wallets rather than return to cash registers; Disney understood early that a meaningful percentage would be kept as souvenirs, making every unredeemed note pure margin.
The cotton substrate was a conscious choice to mimic genuine Federal Reserve notes closely enough to feel authoritative in hand.
