Bank Al-Maghrib introduced this bimetallic dirham series following Mohammed VI's broader monetary modernization program, which also included the redesign of banknotes in the mid-2000s. Morocco's dirham had been inconvertible since the 1970s, and domestic coinage design has long served as one of the few spaces where the palace exercises direct symbolic control over public-facing state identity.
Nordic gold — the same copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy used in euro coins — was adopted partly for its resistance to counterfeiting and partly because Moroccan mints lacked the infrastructure to sustain fine-metal bimetallic production at volume.
