Andorra's footballing relationship with FIFA was, at the time of this issue, largely one of dignified futility — the national team had been competing since 1996 and had accumulated one of the worst international records in European football. The 2012 issue preceded the 2014 Brazil tournament and was part of a broader Andorran commemorative program aimed squarely at collector export revenue, the principality having no meaningful domestic coin circulation to speak of.
