Andorra's coinage authority didn't produce coins for general circulation until 1982 — remarkably late for a European state. The Episcopal Co-Prince series acknowledges one of the more unusual constitutional arrangements in modern Europe: the Bishop of Urgell holds joint sovereignty over Andorra alongside the French head of state, a feudal arrangement dating to the 1278 Paréage treaty that successive republics, empires, and democracies in France simply never bothered to dissolve. Joan Martí i Alanis held the bishopric from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longer-serving co-princes in modern memory.
