Andorra's coinage authority was formalized only in 1982, when the Co-Princes — the Bishop of Urgell and the French President — authorized the first official series. Joan Martí i Alanis, who served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, appears on this issue in his role as one of the two feudal co-princes, a arrangement dating to the 1278 Paréage treaty between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix. The French presidential counterpart on parallel issues changed with Mitterrand's 1981 election, making 1984 the first full series struck under that particular pairing of co-princes.
