The Atomium was built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair as a representation of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, designed by engineer André Waterkeyn. It was never intended to be permanent. Andorra's commemorative gold program of the early 2000s frequently selected European architectural landmarks as subjects, leveraging the principality's lack of EU membership to issue coins outside standard eurozone constraints.
At 1.244 g, this is among the smallest gold issues in the series.
