Kuwait issued this piece in 2019 to mark five years since Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was designated "Humanitarian Work Leader" by the United Nations — a title formally conferred in 2014, the first time the UN had granted such recognition to an individual rather than an institution. The designation followed decades of Kuwaiti foreign aid channeled through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, founded as far back as 1961, the same year the country achieved independence from Britain.
