Algeria's 1972 coinage program followed a decade of post-independence monetary restructuring, with the Banque Centrale d'Algérie working to establish a fully sovereign currency infrastructure after the French franc's withdrawal. Essai pieces like this one were struck in limited numbers as pattern trials submitted for official approval — they rarely entered circulation and were typically distributed among government officials, mint archives, and select collectors.
