Bourguiba had been dead for two years when this coin was issued — he died in April 2000 after over a decade of house arrest in Monastir, the city where he was born and where he remains entombed. His removal from the presidency in 1987 by Prime Minister Ben Ali was declared a medical necessity under Article 57 of the Tunisian constitution, a bloodless but carefully staged act that ended thirty years of one-man rule. Issuing commemorative coinage in his name under a government that deposed him carries an irony the catalog data does not reflect.
