Jordan issued this piece to mark two simultaneous events: the turn of the millennium and the site of Jesus's baptism at Al-Maghtas on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. Al-Maghtas — Arabic for "immersion" — had long been claimed by both Jordan and Israel, but in 2000 Pope John Paul II visited the Jordanian site during his Holy Land pilgrimage, lending significant international weight to Jordan's position. The Vatican formally recognized Al-Maghtas as the authentic baptism site in 2000, the same year this coin was struck.
