The Bahrain Monetary Agency's 1973-series designs — of which this 1998 fifth edition is a late continuation — were among the first Gulf banknotes to be produced with fully integrated machine-readable security architecture. By the late 1990s, De La Rue was incorporating windowed security threads and holographic foil strips as standard on Bahraini issues, partly in response to high-quality counterfeiting of earlier Gulf currency that had circulated through the region during the post-Gulf War economic disruption.
Pick 20 represents the final signature variety before Bahrain moved to a wholly redesigned series in the early 2000s.
