Sudan's 1996 coinage came during a period of acute monetary instability — the country had redenominated its currency in 1992, replacing the pound with the dinar at a rate of 10 pounds to 1 dinar, itself an acknowledgment of years of inflation tied to civil war expenditure and IMF debt negotiations. By 1996, the dinar was already eroding in purchasing power.
Brass was a deliberate cost-reduction choice for higher-denomination circulation coinage at this point in Sudan's minting history.
