This piece commemorates the 19th anniversary of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's seizure of power on November 7, 1987, when he removed the aging Habib Bourguiba — Tunisia's founding father — by invoking a medical incapacity clause, with a handpicked panel of doctors declaring Bourguiba unfit to govern. The coup was effectively bloodless, carried out while Bourguiba slept.
Ben Ali minted anniversary issues in this series through his entire presidency, a habit that ended abruptly when he fled to Saudi Arabia in January 2011 under pressure from the Arab Spring uprisings. The 19th anniversary issue predates that fall by just five years.
