Tunisia's November 7th commemorative series marks the 1987 coup in which Zine El Abidine Ben Ali deposed the aging and increasingly erratic Habib Bourguiba — officially framed as a "medical takeover" under Article 57 of the constitution, which required a certificate of incapacity signed by seven physicians. Ben Ali immediately institutionalized November 7th as a national holiday, and the Banque Centrale issued commemorative coins on each anniversary with near-mechanical regularity. The French-legend variant of this issue was produced alongside an Arabic-legend counterpart, reflecting Tunisia's bilingual administrative tradition inherited from the Protectorate period.
The 2004 elections referenced on the coin returned Ben Ali with 94.5% of the vote.
