Tunisia's 1987 "coup" was characteristically bloodless — President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali removed the aging and increasingly erratic Habib Bourguiba by invoking a medical incapacity clause, with a team of doctors signing a certificate of incompetence hours before dawn on November 7th. No shots fired, no arrests of consequence. Ben Ali immediately declared himself president and began issuing commemorative coins marking November 7th as a national holiday, a practice that continued annually and produced a substantial series of gold issues through his tenure.
The French-legend variant exists alongside an Arabic-legend counterpart, reflecting Tunisia's bilingual official culture inherited from the Bourguiba years.
