This is a student union scrip note, not a state-issued banknote — issued by the Student Centre of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek for use within the university's canteen, bar, or related facilities. Such internal currency was common across Yugoslav university campuses in the late socialist period, functioning as a rationing and subsidy mechanism rather than general-purpose money. Students would exchange dinars for scrip at a subsidized rate, then spend it on meals or services within the campus system.
1990 placed this note in a peculiar moment: Yugoslavia's federal dinar was undergoing hyperinflationary pressure, and institutions like student centres were increasingly managing their own internal economies. The university itself takes its name from the nineteenth-century Croatian bishop and scholar Josip Juraj Strossmayer, one of the more significant figures in Croatian cultural and political history.
