In 1951, the newly established West German state was still working through what its coinage should look like. Several pattern pieces were struck in copper to test designs before the eventual silver 5 Mark type entered circulation in 1952. These copper patterns never passed the approval stage, and most were retained by the mint or distributed to officials — they did not enter commerce in any form.
The Hamburgische Münze produced the approved circulation strikes the following year in .625 fine silver.
