Issued to mark the centenary of Marx's death, this coin generated immediate political friction — a West German state commemorating the intellectual founder of the competing ideology ninety kilometers from the inner German border. The decision was deliberate: the Federal Republic was asserting that Marx belonged to a universal German intellectual heritage rather than conceding him exclusively to the GDR, which had spent decades building its legitimacy around his name.
East Germany had already issued its own Marx centenary coinage the same year, making 1983 the unusual case of both German states simultaneously striking commemoratives for the same figure.
