Issued as part of the FAO's series encouraging agricultural self-sufficiency in developing nations, this coin appeared just four years after Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 — a period when the country faced a Greek trade embargo over the dispute about its constitutional name. The embargo, which ran from 1994 to 1995, severely disrupted the Macedonian economy and made the FAO's food security messaging unusually pointed for this particular issue.
