The National Bank of Vietnam issued this series during a period when South Vietnam's monetary system was under sustained pressure from wartime inflation and the massive influx of American dollars circulating through the military economy. U.S. Military Payment Certificates were widely used as a parallel currency, and ordinary coinage struggled to remain relevant in daily transactions as prices climbed.
Copper-nickel was a deliberate choice for durability under harsh tropical conditions — earlier aluminum issues had proven too easily damaged in circulation.
