The Democratic Republic of Vietnam began issuing its own currency almost immediately after Ho Chi Minh's 1945 declaration of independence, but printing capacity was severely constrained. Notes from the 1949–1950 period were produced under wartime conditions during the First Indochina War, with the Viet Minh controlling limited territory and French forces actively interdicting supply lines. Quality and consistency across the series varied considerably as a result.
P#46 is known in multiple color varieties, reflecting interrupted print runs and ad hoc substitutions of available inks rather than any deliberate design revision.
