Issued under the FAO coin program, which recruited national mints worldwide to produce agricultural-themed circulating coinage aimed at publicizing food security goals. Brazil's participation in the 1980s came during a period of severe monetary instability — the cruzeiro was losing value so rapidly that this denomination would be rendered essentially worthless within months of issue, and the entire cruzeiro system was abolished in 1986 when the Cruzado replaced it at a rate of 1,000 to one.
